Aik Thi Nani

The Middle Section put up an adaptation of Shahid Nadeem's play Aik Thi Nani, this year. The play revolves around two sisters and their grand-daughter, Sabeen. The sisters, Nani and Dadi, were separated at the time of Partition and reunite after a quarter of a century. The conflict in the play begins when Sabeen is offered a role on television and Dadi strongly opposes her taking on such a role while Nani urges her to express her creativity.
The audience enjoyed the dramatic performance and responded well to the humour. It was a play with an important message and, during rehearsals, even the cast enjoyed discussing important questions regarding the role of women in conventional society, and why certain people chose to renounce their history, culture and art after partition.
