V-Steam Winter Camp Success

30 Jan 2018

Karachi Grammar School’s inaugural Winter School ‘V-STEAM 2018’ concluded on the chilly evening of January 6th 2018, made warm with the company of the community that nourished it.  Students, parents, facilitators and staff mingled around a bonfire and shared experiences and insights. This was exactly what we had hoped to achieve with this pilot project of creating an alternate learning space as part of the Enrichment Programme – a community of learners.

Values, Science, Technology, Art and Mathematics – drivers of the future of education led the design of the 3-day experience.  V-STEAM included experiences in cooking, drone building and flying, photography, coding, digital media, painting, radio production, 3-D modeling (including printing a robot) and woodwork.

Each day it was evident that the students enjoyed hands on experiences far more than theory based lectures. Whether it was kneading dough for a pizza, hosting a live radio show designing a circuit for an observation drone, our students were willing to go the extra mile to learn more and most importantly ask the right questions.

The feedback and learning achieved during V-STEAM will drive the Enrichment Programme – evidence based, active learning is where students are best able to achieve a clear understanding of seemingly abstract concepts and ideas. Going further, the arts and new media will also be a crucial part of the kind of literacy required of our students as they head to university.

Going forward, we hope to create more opportunities that will extend, empower and enrich the learning of our students. We continue to seek your support for these novel intiatives.
